How does a traineeship work?

The traineeship program aims to teach drivers with a valid NSW C Class (car) license, to become a fully qualified professional bus driver in some of our depots*. The training lasts between 18 to 24 months (depending on your individual progress) and gives you a nationally accredited qualification of Certificate III in Driving Operations. This certificate will give you a competitive advantage in the industry as a professional bus driver, setting you apart from the pack.

*Fully funded Traineeship program applies in metropolitan regions of Sydney only.

Do I have to pay for the training relating to the traineeship?

If you meet the eligibility criteria training fees are covered by CDC NSW provided you stay employed for a minimum of 24 months. As part of the process, you will be required to spend only small up-front fees to obtain a police check, driver authority application, medical, Working with Children check, Medium Rigid (MR) License knowledge test at RMS, etc.

How do I know if I am eligible for paid training?

All you need is to be an Australian citizen or permanent resident. Other funding terms and conditions may apply, including holding an unrestricted NSW licence for a minimum of 12 months.

What if my driving record is bad?

Don’t worry we have seen it all! Send your driving record through to us and we will review it. Any DUI (Driving under the influence) charges will automatically exclude you unfortunately, however other than that please apply, and we will review your application to assess if you will be eligible to obtain your Driver Authority. You shouldn’t worry about a few speeding tickets, etc.

Is there an age limit?

To be eligible you will need to have held a NSW unrestricted license for a minimum of 12 months and be at least 20 years old.

Will I get paid?

Once you commence employment with CDC NSW you will be paid while undergoing your licence upgrade training and for the duration of your traineeship.

  • Driver Authority Assessment Training: you will not be paid for this half day attendance; however CDC NSW will cover the training cost for the assessment.
  • When you commence your MR license upgrade you will be paid as a casual trainee employee.
  • Once you successfully pass your MR license test, you will be converted to provisional part time employment under the relevant CDC NSW Enterprise Agreement.
  • Once you have completed the Certificate III traineeship program, you will transition to a permanent employee. Pay rates will be as per the relevant CDC NSW Enterprise Agreement.

What do I need before I start my Licence Upgrade?

You will need to tick the boxes for a trainee driver pre-start checklist which will include

  • National police check.
  • Proof of identity documentation.
  • Driver authority application.
  • Unique Student Identifier number (issued by the Australian Government).
  • Medical assessment.
  • Working with children check.
  • MR knowledge test at RMS and logbook, etc.

There will be someone available to assist you with any questions you might have while working through this checklist. You will be required to have your MR logbook prior to commencing your MR licence upgrade at a minimum and the other items will be required for your driver authority application to be submitted prior to commencement of the MR training.

What happens if I fail my MR licence test?

You may be given a second chance to pass your MR licence test, however if you fail the test a second time unfortunately you will not be able to progress through the program.

Is it hard to pass the tests?

We have a very low failure rate historically, most of them pass the test… Give it a try!

What is the training like?

Safety on the road is the highest priority for all road users and especially at CDC NSW. The program aims to promote safe behaviour on the roads, acknowledgment of the road rules and great customer service.

6 Weeks in the first phase:

1/2 day driver authority assessment (all bus drivers require a driver authority in NSW which is issued by RMS to drive passenger vehicles). This includes a $70 application fee (paid by the student/trainee, and includes a manual with 102 multiple choice questions in an open book assessment). This activity will be managed by our training partner INTO Training onsite or online.
2 weeks of training provided with our training partner to upgrade your C Class licence to MR licence. Remember, you must have an unrestricted NSW licence for a minimum of 12 months to be eligible.
1 week of in classroom training to begin your Certificate III modules.
1 day of induction covering CDC NSW standard operating procedures and safe working practices.
2-3 weeks with a driver trainer for bus and route familiarisation training and then you will be partnered with a driver mentor to support you.

Once this phase is completed and signed off by your driver trainer you will be allocated a roster line of work. During this period of time, you will attend monthly in classroom module sessions with our training partner INTO Training. You will complete on the job training for the remainder of the traineeship concurrently.

It will take 18 months for you to complete all training modules in the Certificate III and meet the competency requirements on the job. Once all these are achieved and signed off you will receive your Certificate III.
